Week 11

Our last week of 2024 art classes! This last week we finished projects from previous weeks, painted wreaths, and experimented with watercolour creatures. Happy holidays!

Take away: Keep playing and exploring, it’s the best way to learn how your art materials work. We never stop learning.

I want to thank everyone for signing up for my art classes this year. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go but I had a great time getting to know everyone and sharing my love of art with you all.

Week 10

After a couple weeks off, we were back in the studio talking about colour - combining cool and warm colours. The kids’ classes worked on a step by step painting/drawing of a hare wearing a colourful sweater.

Take away: Use the colour wheel to help find your colour combinations.

Week 9

This week was about creating a landscape with snow - urban and forest landscapes were completed, with a bit of a Christmas theme.

Week 8

Observational drawing practice and owl drawings and paintings. We used reference sheets to get us started on drawing owls and then we invented our own. A good practice when you want to learn how to draw something new.

Take away: When you want to draw something new, start with a reference, draw it a few times and then remove the reference to create your own.

Week 7

Observational drawing practice and mixed media sticker sheets. I am getting worse at taking photos as the weeks go on. There is just so much happening during these classes! It’s wonderful.

The most exciting part of this week was using the new art studio for the first time, with the kids.

Take away: You can paint on anything! It doesn’t have to be expensive paper. You can paint on sticker paper or labels, newspaper, and cardboard.

Week 6

Observational drawing practice and traditional Chinese black ink exploration. I might not try this one again but it was great to explore a new medium. It was difficult for a lot of the kids to let go of their final result, as ink will do what it wants. Other than the first photo, the work below is of my own examples. I forgot to take photos this week.

Take away: Don’t give up. Even professional artists don’t love every painting they do.

Week 5

Observational drawing practice, watercolour jellyfish to let its blending and transparent properties shine.

Take away: adding water to the page first helps to blend multiple colours and increases transparency. Try using this technique to create wings, insects, and other sea animals.

Week 4

Observational drawing practice, negative space practice,
and painting a dragon based on work by illustrator, Raahat Kaduji. This is her Instagram page if your child would like to see more of her work.

Take away: practice looking at and drawing the negative space, which is the space around your object of interest. A tough one to figure out but once you start seeing that space, you’ll find it easier to draw your object.

Week 3

Observational drawing practice, colour wheel drawings,
and painting with complimentary colours.

Take away: try and make a colour wheel at home.

Week 2

Observational drawing practice, mixed-media play, collage landscape pieces such as flowers, buildings, leaves, animals and more. The No-School Friday class worked on watercolour galaxies and mushroom drawings.

Take away: try observational drawings at home. Grab an object and try drawing or painting it in 5 different ways.

Week 1

Introductions, observational drawing practice, colour party warm up in mixed-media, and an introduction to our collaborative collage landscape that we will work on until December.

Take Away: try and keep a sketchbook at home and draw or paint in it every day, even if it’s just for 5 minutes.
