Art Project - What’s in the Frame?

What’s In The Frame? was designed after I took a picture of downtown Fernie with these trees framing the buildings in the background. The trees were darker, and ominous, while the town was bright and welcoming. How you frame a painting can send the viewer’s eyes right where you want them to and can also tell a greater story.

The Goal:

Framing - with contrasting layers, help the viewers find the story.

The Materials:

Watercolour paint.

The Steps:

Let’s start in our sketchbooks. You can practice the greenery of your trees. How are you going to make each tree stand out? Different shades of green? What are you framing? Is it an animal, person, or lake? It’s up to you but you might as well practice first.

Once you’re done practicing, we’re going to start painting the greenery first, behind the trees and on the ground, in front of the tree trunks. Try to play with various shades of your green to create some depth.

Depending on what you’re framing in the background, I would start painting those elements first, before you paint your tree trunks and branches. If you’re painting an elk, like I did below, with no background at all, then the elk can be painted at the end. There are so many ways to finish this art project, so try and think of what story you want to tell.
