Art Project - Oh Greenhouse
Inspired by artwork by Oamul Lu, a fantastic artist that you should look up, I created this Oh Greenhouse art project for an adult art class of mine. I wanted to try the masking fluid I had just purchased to help shape the greenhouse framing. It’s also a cool way to show contrast, between the inside and the outside of the greenhouse.
The Goal:
To practice using masking fluid or tape - to mask your paper and leave it untouched.
The Materials:
Masking fluid/tape, watercolour paint, pencils, neocolor ii wax pastels.
The Steps:
1. Let’s start in our sketchbooks. You can practice:
• painting plants.
• colours you want to use.
• using the masking fluid or tape. If you’re not using watercolours, see how the tape or fluid works with your art materials.
2. If you’re using masking fluid to create your greenhouse frame, apply it to your page a couple hours before you want to begin. It takes a while to dry and it needs to be completely dry when you start to paint. Masking Fluid works great with watercolours. Tape doesn’t require any extra time.
3. Without overthinking it, try and apply light tones of green in larger blobs on the inside of your masked greenhouse. This will help create a bit of depth as you work towards the foreground, within the greenhouse. As you layer your plants in your greenhouse, become more detailed as you get to the foreground.
4. Continue to layer your greenhouse with various plants that you practiced or new ones that you think would belong there. You could also look at my Plants page on Pinterest for more inspiration.
5. It’s also time to think about what’s happening outside of the greenhouse or keep it simple and paint a light blue, representing the sky, and light green, representing the ground. You’ll want to add something in order to make your greenhouse frame visible.
6. Once you’re done, and the painting has fully dried, rub the masking fluid off with your finger. Do it slowly, as it can tear your paper. If you used tape, just pull it off the page in reverse order that you placed it on.
