Art Project - Wildflower Pollinator
Wildflower Pollinator was created for my 10-12 year old art class who really wanted to paint flowers. It’s something I love to paint so I jumped on the chance. My style of teaching is to show a little and allow them to create their own art because I find kids have such amazing imaginations and I want them to explore their ideas.
The Goal:
To practice layering your watercolours and mixed media and play with the idea of contrast.
The Materials:
Watercolour paint, watercolour pencils, black fine liner, and neocolor ii wax pastels.
Step 1 - Watercolour Flowers
You don’t have to paint exactly what I painted but I love the shape of this wildflower. You can play a little with the colours to add slight variations.
I added the stems and some dark areas on the bottom of the flower once my watercolour paint dried, using watercolour pencil but coloured pencils will also work.
Step 2 - Green Leaves
Play around with your brushes to create leaves around your flowers. Let the brush do most of the work.
When it dries, add lines around your leaves with coloured pencils.
Step 3 - Textures and Highlights
Using the tools you have, try and add some leafy textures and some darker green brush strokes to give the leaves depth.
I also added some new colours to the flowers. I chose a cool pink to go with my blues.
Step 4 - Background
To fill in the white space and create more depth, I added lighter green leaves and flowers for the ‘background’.
Step 5 - The Pollinators
Although, I thought the artwork was great without the bees, I wanted to add another living element to the picture AND I wanted to play with contrast so I added black fine liner bee illustrations.
