Creative Warm Up - Shape Party
We all need to warm up sometimes, especially when we sit at the table with all our supplies and we don’t know how to get started. This is my favourite painting and mark making exercise to get my ideas flowing…or to just play around.
Follow these instructions in your sketchbook or on a single sheet of paper:
Paint (I used watercolours) shapes using a variety of colours all over the entire sheet, giving each shape a bit of space in between.
Let it dry. This is important for layering. If you want it to get more experimental, start laying while it’s still a little wet. You’ll get some interesting scraps and lines.
Start playing around with shading and markings using colour pencils. This is experimental, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Set aside the colours you use so you can try and use them again in other places. This creates a bit of harmony on your page.
Try other materials and try and turn some of the shapes into objects like fruit or faces. I almost always end up putting eyes on something. You can also just add patterns or markings to the shapes and create abstract ideas.
