Drawing Prompt - Clouds

There’s an art to painting or drawing clouds. They seem like they should be easy, and they are if you’re going for those fun cartoony clouds, but I think the hardest part is painting more realistic clouds with the right use of light. Use this image to practice your shading and tinting. Paint it or draw it, use the tools you have. If you’re painting watercolours, start light and end with the darkest areas. If you’re drawing it with a pencil, with a loose wrist use the side of your pencil (not the tip) to build up your layers from light to dark. Use an eraser to lighten areas.

A few tips for clouds:
• clouds are often larger and more dispersed in the foreground and closer together and parallel to the horizon line at a distance.
• layer, layer, layer to create depth and volume.
• use a larger brush for bigger clouds and a smaller brush for smaller clouds.
• keep a loose wrist and use circular, swirling motions to create their fluffy appearance.
• keep your light source consistent.
• when using watercolour paints, use the wet on wet method for a more blended look. While the paint is still wet, try dabbing away the paint using tissue paper or fabric cloth.
