Why is a Sketchbook Practice Important?

My sketchbook practice didn’t start until the spring of 2023, when I understood that art is important for me. I need to it every day because it brings me so much joy and peace. A sketchbook, a little book with blank pages, can do so much more than give you a place to do art:

• They’re small, contained, and affordable, which makes creating art every day more manageable. You don’t need to get expensive sketchbooks for your art practice.
• It’s a place for practice, which allows me to make lots of mistakes and grow as an artist.
• I’m more likely to explore new ideas, which leads me to new painting or drawing techniques, colour combinations that I might not have found otherwise, and new ideas for future artworks.
• No fear. Nobody needs to ever see my sketchbook, which helps me paint or draw without caring what other people think. It’s less about creating something that others will love and more about my own personal expression and exploration.
• Sketchbooks are like a museum of your progress. You can flip back to previous books and see how far you’ve come or look for those amazing colour combinations you wanted to try.

Sketchbooks aren’t just for beginner artists. All the artists I follow on Instagram, from local to international, all have sketchbooks and value their practice.
