How To Use Watercolours - Start A Messy Landscape

How Brina Schenk starts painting her messy, landscape paintings with lots of white space.

When I start a messy, abstract landscape painting, these are the steps I take:

• Start with a big brush and a colour you want to build from. I typically start with a yellow or green.
• Knowing it’s a landscape, try to create a shape that will move your eye around and create depth.
• Build from the messy shapes you start with. It won't always make sense right away. After you add a few layers of paint, you’ll start to see where you need to go next.

This is a great way to practice using watercolours when you’re just beginning. You’ll see how the paint and colours blend as not all paint acts the same way. You can see the final artwork, My Assurance.
