Art Project - Gnome Home

Gnome Home art project by Brina Schenk, Canadian illustrator and art instructor

The gnome home art project idea came to me after a birthday party art session and the girls were wanting to paint a gnome or a gnome home. We did the gnome (they rocked it) and then I thought I should do a gnome home still because the possibilities are endless. It’s so fun!

The Goal:

Use colour in a way that highlights your focal point. I sketched my gnome home in pencil and then made the lights and windows shine.

The Materials:

I used a pencil and a watercolour pencil for the lights. I wanted to be able to blend them with water. If you want to get more colour in there, use paints, pencil crayons, or any material you have on hand.

The Process:

  1. Draw/paint your gnome home. A lot of kids did the tree stump or even the side of a tree and others did mushrooms. Either way, you want to create a scene that’s a cute ‘home’.

  2. Add all the details a gnome would add - lights, door, windows, porch, ladder, stepping stones, swing, garden.

  3. Give the gnome some friends - a butterfly, snail, beetle, or worm.

  4. Try and make the gnome home stand out from the lush greens surrounding it. I framed the home with plants so it looks like the viewer is peeking through the forest and happened upon this cute little home.
