my watercolour and gouache paint palette is messy and muddy just the way I like it

As an art instructor, artist, and Mom, I am aware of the waste in art. The amount of paper, canvases, clay, craft supplies, paint, brushes, crayons, and markers that end up in the bins is heartbreaking but unavoidable. Art is a necessity, and stopping is not an option.

What I can share are the things I’ve done to reduce my own waste.

Paint
The best part of using watercolour or gouache paint is how little you can waste. Since they’re water-soluble, you just mix your colours on a palette and leave them there to dry. My paint palettes look very messy to an outsider, but it’s all paint that I will use later. Watercolours are known to get ‘muddy’ when too many paints are mixed together, but I find that muddiness charming, and I’ve learned to embrace it. Read more here.
